Supporting a fourth-generation family business to appoint their first Non-Executive Director

About Frederic Smart
Frederic Smart, founded in 1906, is a fourth-generation family business still owned by CEO Douglas Smart and his three children. The company operates in agricultural trading and food sector logistics. In June 2025, its logistics division became Frederic Smart Logistics Ltd, incorporating Frederic Smart Shipping Ltd, an international freight forwarding joint venture.

The Brief
After restructuring to separate its divisions, the Smart family set an ambitious goal: double Frederic Smart Logistics in 3–5 years through organic growth and acquisitions. To support this, Pure Executive was appointed to recruit the company’s first Non-Executive Director—someone with sector insight, challenge, and fresh perspective, while respecting the dynamics of a closely held family business.
Our Approach
We invested significant time at the outset, meeting with Douglas, the CFO, and a trusted professional advisor to gain a clear understanding of the role, the company’s strategic priorities, and its culture. Drawing on advanced research tools, we mapped both regional and national logistics firms to identify individuals with deep sector knowledge and acquisition expertise, while carefully avoiding any potential conflicts of interest. This rigorous approach produced a strong shortlist of experienced and high-potential Non-Executive Directors. The criteria extended beyond sector expertise to include strategic challenge, pragmatism, and board discipline—balanced with the all-important cultural fit. Our focus was on finding someone who could bring a fresh perspective while respecting the family-led ethos. By working closely with Douglas and the board throughout the process, we were able to present a shortlist of exceptional calibre, giving them genuine choice and confidence in the final appointment.

The Result
In July 2025, Keith Mahoney became Frederic Smart Logistics’ first Non-Executive Director. With senior logistics experience at M&S and a track record advising fast-growing companies, Keith combines corporate expertise with entrepreneurial insight. His sector knowledge, pragmatic approach, and ability to guide strategy without adding complexity make him an excellent fit. Supported by Keith and the Smart family’s leadership, the business is strongly positioned to achieve its ambitious growth plans, and we are proud to have partnered in this appointment.
“It was a real pleasure to work with Douglas and his family on this milestone appointment. We’re proud to have helped them find a NED who brings the right balance of experience, challenge, and cultural fit.”
