Supporting a family business in appointing its first ever non-family Board Chair

About Barnes Construction
Barnes Construction is a respected, family-owned business based in Ipswich, delivering new build and refurbishment projects across sectors including education, healthcare, residential, and commercial. Established in 1978, the company is known for its collaborative, respectful approach and long-standing client relationships.

The Brief
Pure Executive was recommended to support Barnes in appointing its first ever non-family Board Chair—an important and sensitive appointment as the company transitioned leadership after more than 45 years. The successful candidate needed deep industry knowledge, regional insight, and alignment with Barnes’ values and culture, with the ability to support growth and succession planning for a business with turnover exceeding £100 million.
Our Approach
We partnered closely with the Barnes family and executive team to shape a thoughtful, values-led search. Drawing on our extensive network—including non-executive contacts—we identified candidates who could complement the business’ ethos. The process included site visits, family and team introductions, and assessment with a Chartered Psychologist to ensure strong cultural and leadership fit.

“A massive thank you to Lynn and the Pure Executive team. Not just professional and diligent throughout the process but you were personal and showed true understanding of me as a candidate and of the business… thank you.”
The Result
A high-quality, diverse shortlist was presented. Ian Northen was appointed in 2024. A Chartered Accountant and former CEO of a regional builders merchant turned national business, Ian brought the right experience and leadership style to support Barnes’ future.

The breadth and relevance of Ian’s experience, his humility, combined with his collaborative and insightful approach makes him the ideal successor to William (Barnes). The team and I are proud to have supported them in this key appointment "
