London Stansted Airport is part of the Manchester Airports Group (MAG). In February 2013, MAG completed its acquisition of the airport from the former owners BAA. MAG also owns and operated Manchester, East Midlands and Bournemouth airports.
Part of the Manchester Airports Group (MAG), Stansted Airport welcomes over 24 million passengers a year and operates flights to over 190 destinations. The operator of each major airport is obliged by statute through the Civil Aviation Act of 1982 to provide facilities for consultation about the management of the airport. The Stansted Airport Consultative Committee (STACC) consists of representation from three key Groups - users of the airport, local authorities and organisations speaking for local interests. It’s role is to be a constructive ‘critical friend’, holding the airport operator to account in respect of the overall management and administration of the airport through consultation and cooperation.
This was a high profile opportunity, with vested interest from numerous government and political bodies, as well as the local community. The role of the Chair is to lead the committee of 21 members, representing the interests of each of the three Groups and developing a close, effective working relationship with the CEO, the wider Executive Board and Senior Leadership Team of the Airport. Chairing large meetings in public, the role required an individual who could demonstrate the ability to listen objectively, remain impartial at all times, summarise complex issues succinctly and identify a consensus way forward. The successful appointment would be a proven authentic, credible business leader with previous non-executive Chair experience.
Pure Executive invested upfront time with the client, visiting the airport to not only understand the experience required for the role but also the vision and values of the committee and the cultural fit required. After taking the brief Pure Executive put together a full information pack including job description, company profile and package details on our clients behalf, along with agreeing potential organisations and sectors to headhunt from, online and social media advertising solutions as well as the process of collaborating with our referrer network of professional advisors across the region. Pure Executive researched and identified a list of over 50 experienced Non Executives Directors and senior business leaders in similar style roles or with relevant experience to approach, alongside our extensive network of professional advisors in the region. Our online and social media branded advertising campaign produced significant interest from over 75 applications. After telephone screening candidates, Pure Executive then conducted competency based interviews of 12 longlisted candidates. From this longlist, we presented a diverse shortlist of seven candidates to the STACC recruitment panel of which they selected five to first interview. Two candidates were selected for final interview, spending one-one-one time with the CEO of Stansted Airport and the recruitment panel once again. Pure Executive then worked with STACC to put together an attractive package for the successful candidate along with managing the process through to a successful acceptance of the offer.
