Extremis Technology, Executive Chair

Extremis Technology is an early stage business, concerned with providing transitional shelter to internally displaced people (IDPs), throughout the world, that have been affected by disaster. They achieve this by designing, manufacturing and licensing the manufacture of robust, portable shelters intended to withstand extremes of nature. Their aim is to provide medium term housing solutions for IDPs, instead of canvas accommodation and prior to permanent settlement.

The Brief

The current Acting Executive Chair was returning to a non-executive role and the appointment of an experienced Executive Chair would lead the organisation from pre-revenue into growth. The new Chair would build on the momentum; gaining the confidence of customers and investors, building the team and maximising the opportunities within this huge but complex market.

The Approach

Candidates were identified through a combination of methods including search, seeking referrals, networking and confidential advertising. We approached the search by identifying contacts within a number of core areas such as; local Private Equity and Venture Capital firms, Investor Groups and the Non- Executive community. We worked with the Board to establish a recruitment brief, to fully understand the business plan and most importantly understand the culture. We managed the entire response, interviewing potential candidates to identify a short-list of five candidates, as well as working in partnership with the Board to establish an appropriate remuneration structure.

The assessment process consisted of three stages; first interviews established fit and ability, second interviews involved a presentation on their approach to the brief and the final stage enabled the Board to get to know them over lunch where contracts were signed.

We worked with the Board to establish a recruitment brief, to fully understand the business plan and most importantly understand the culture.

We chose PURE Resourcing Solutions because their response to our initial briefing was so sensitive and insightful, appreciating the complexities and the requirements of a start-up business. PURE brought us an exemplary collection of applicants from which we had no difficulty selecting three extremely strong prospective candidates. PURE helped us throughout the whole process from long listing through the development of interview questions to selection and post-selection negotiations. With hindsight, I don’t think we could have done it without them.

The Result

The successful appointment of Kevin Parslow has enabled the existing Acting Executive Chair to return to her advisor role as Non- Executive Director. Momentum in the business is gathering and Extremis Technology is looking forward to their future success.
